Coastal Management Strategies
It is becoming more and more vital for governments to get involved in the management of the coastlines to protect the homes and the livelihoods of the people living by the sea. Coastal erosion and flooding are on the increase with sea level rises adding to the water levels. Without intervention serious social and economic impacts will be felt around the coasts of the British isles, with the vast majority relying on the seaside for the tourism industry.
Coastal management is also extremely important for the surrounding wildlife and natural habitats. It is important for to select the correct strategy for effectiveness all round.
There are four key approaches:
Hard engineering is high technology, high cost, human made solutions that do little work with nature and sustainability.
soft engineering is low technology, low cost solutions that work hand in hand with nature to become sustainable.

There are four key approaches:
- Hold the line - Existing strategies are maintained but not added to.
- Advance the line - New defences are built further out to sea to relieve the pressure on the current strategies.
- Retreat the line - Move people out of the direct line of danger and allow the sea to take control.
- Do nothing - Deal with the effects of flooding and erosion as they happen.
