Marshland Creation
- Marshland, created by encouraging growth of salt-loving vegetation and plants, can act as a coastal defence.
- The plants that grow help to stabilise the sediment here as well as breaking up the waves and reducing their speed. This dissipates their energy and decreases their erosive power.
- Marshland also controls the area in which waves can travel, which prevents coastal flooding.
- The creation of marshland is also known as 'managed retreat', whereby the sea is allowed to flood an area and overtime become marshland.
